The Bastion is a distinctive 1853 wooden fort and the only freestanding wooden bastion built by the Hudson’s Bay Company remaining in North America. This octagonal, three-story blockhouse originally served as an office, arsenal, and refuge during the coal mining era on Vancouver Island.
Located in Nanaimo, it stands as a historic landmark with original timbers and artifacts inside. Group tours are available seasonally, offering a tangible connection to the region’s early industrial history and heritage architecture.
